Project guidance · Sourcing & reporting

Natural material.Measured impact.

Wood is renewable and stores biogenic carbon while it remains in service, but a credible sustainability claim still needs product-specific evidence. Use Maximo’s sourcing and process information as a starting point, then request the certificates, declarations and project calculations required by the selected rating system.

Heat-and-Steam Modification

Separate the wood treatment from coatings and the full assembly

Maximo describes thermal modification as a high-temperature process using heat and steam without added synthetic wood preservatives. This distinguishes the treatment step from pressure-preservative systems.

The environmental profile of the installed product also includes coatings, adhesives, fasteners, packaging, transport and eventual disposal. End-of-life options depend on those added materials and local rules, so “biodegradable” or “clean bio-energy” should not be promised for every finished assembly.

Carbon Claims & Life-Cycle Data

Use verified boundaries and comparable declarations

Wood contains biogenic carbon absorbed during tree growth. How that storage is reported depends on the life-cycle methodology, declared unit, sourcing and end-of-life assumptions.

Do not label a product “net negative” or claim a percentage advantage over aluminum, fiber cement or composite materials without comparable, current life-cycle declarations. Request product-specific data and let the project’s LCA method determine the result.

Forest-Sourcing Documentation

Confirm certification at the order level

The Maximo catalog states that its wood comes from sustainably managed forests and identifies select FSC-certified products. That is not the same as saying every species, profile or shipment carries FSC or PEFC chain-of-custody documentation.

If certified wood is required, identify the standard, percentage method and chain-of-custody evidence in the purchase documents before ordering. Keep the invoice and certificate scope with the project submittal.

LEED & Project Submittals

The product can support documentation; the project earns the credit

A building product does not earn a LEED point by itself. Eligibility depends on the rating-system version, project calculations, documentation date and the contribution of all qualifying products.

For a submittal, request the current forest-sourcing certificate, product composition, coating and adhesive data, manufacturing location, life-cycle declaration if available, and warranty. The project’s LEED professional should determine which credits and thresholds those documents support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common project
questions

Are Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) available for Maximo Thermo?+

Availability should be confirmed for the exact product and current reporting period. Ask Builders FirstSource Issaquah for the latest manufacturer documentation, then verify its scope and validity before including it in a submittal.

Does thermally modified wood emit any harmful VOCs indoors?+

Do not make an indoor-air claim from the thermal process alone. Evaluate the exact wood product together with its coating, adhesive and installation system, and request the emissions or VOC documentation required by the project.
