Factory prefinish.Predictable from day one.

Factory prefinishing can provide more controlled application and curing than coating boards after installation. It also makes back faces, edges and profiles easier to reach. The right system still depends on the wood species, desired color, exposure and the coating manufacturer’s instructions.

Why Four-Sided Coverage Matters

Controlled preparation and access to every board face

Coating only the exposed face can leave the back, edges and detailed profile surfaces less protected. Uneven exposure does not guarantee movement, but it can create less predictable moisture response and appearance over time.

A qualified prefinisher can prepare and coat accessible board surfaces before installation under managed conditions. Ask the supplier to document the coating product, coverage, color, cure requirements and field touch-up procedure for the exact order.

Specify the complete system

“Prefinished” should identify the finish manufacturer, color, application faces, number of coats and field repair method. Confirm those items before ordering rather than relying on the label alone.

Factory vs. Jobsite Application

Compare control, access and project scheduling

Jobsite finishing depends on suitable surface moisture, temperature, humidity and protection from rain, dust and debris. Those conditions can narrow the application window and make backs or interlocking profile surfaces difficult to reach after installation.

Factory prefinishing moves much of that work into a controlled setting. Delivery timing and installation readiness still depend on the approved sample, production schedule, curing, packaging and the condition of the material when it reaches the site.

Coating Options for Thermally Modified Wood

Match the finish to the substrate, exposure and maintenance plan

Thermal modification changes the wood’s moisture response and can affect how a coating wets and penetrates the surface. Use a finish whose manufacturer confirms compatibility with the selected thermally modified species.

Pigmented penetrating finishes are commonly considered when the goal is to retain a brown tone while keeping the grain visible. Other breathable exterior systems may also be suitable when tested and specified as a complete assembly.

The sample process should confirm color, sheen, absorption and coating build on the actual profile. Also establish how the finish will be cleaned, renewed and repaired before the order is released.

Delivery, Handling & Field Touch-Up

Protect the approved finish from the truck to final inspection

Inspect prefinished material at delivery, keep it dry and handle it in a way that avoids scuffing or contaminating the face. Separate damaged boards and document any concern before installation.

Field cuts, miters, notches and installation marks may need matching finish or cut-end protection. Confirm the approved touch-up product and method with the finish supplier, and complete a small test before visible repairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common project
questions

Does factory prefinishing mean I never have to coat the wood again?+

No. Prefinishing provides the initial coating under controlled conditions, but exterior finishes still require inspection and eventual renewal. The interval varies with the product, color, exposure, orientation and cleaning history.

What color touch-up kit should I order with my Maximo Thermo order?+

Ask Builders FirstSource Issaquah to identify the finish system and matching field product for the selected species and color. Do not substitute a touch-up material until compatibility and appearance have been confirmed on a sample.

Can I choose a custom color stain for factory prefinishing?+

Color and prefinishing options depend on the profile, quantity and current finishing program. Request an approved physical sample and written coating specification before treating a custom color as available.
